  5. Ribosomal protein S18 is one of the proteins from the small ribosomal subunit.
  6. subunit.  In Escherichia coli, S18 has been involved in aminoacyl-tRNA binding
  7. [1].  It appears to be situated at the tRNA A-site of the ribosome. It belongs
  8. to a family of ribosomal proteins which, on the basis of sequence similarities
  9. [2], groups:
  10.  
  11.  - Eubacterial S18.
  12.  - Plant chloroplast S18.
  13.  - Cyanelle S18.
  14.  
  15. As a  signature pattern, we selected a conserved region in the central section
  16. of the  protein. This region contains two basic residues which may be involved
  17. in RNA-binding.
